Ring Ouzel and other local stuff

Eventually caught up with the Ring Ouzel at Fowlmere, and took a dodgy photo from miles away…

Also the first Orange tips of the year, firstly at Chrishall, then in the garden. Also in the garden, a Blackcap has been singing for a couple of days, Starlings are nesting in the roof, a Robin is nesting somewhere (collecting cat’s hairs for nesting material), Blackbirds are in the church-side bramble, and Great Tits are investigating the usual hole in the apple tree.

Fowlmere and Shepreth L-moor

A very quick pre-work walk around Fowlmere before work produced the year’s first Willow Warblers for me. An equally quick walk around Shepreth after work produced not a lot. Though I did realise whilst walking around that I wasn’t recording mammals. So, from now on I will! As it happens, unusually, today I saw nothing but Rabbits!

Minsmere

Excellent afternoon at Minsmere. Found a Firecrest, and saw the reported Caspian Gull and Glossy Ibis. Caspian Gull was a 2nd summer, and everything fitted well, apart from the overall structure which I thought slightly atypical.

Crap photos taken of all the birds. The Firecrest is not too terrible and was close, but moved constantly. The other two were very distant.

Also took a few better pictures of Black-headed Gulls and a Pheasant…

Fowlmere to Fulmar

Was just about to head to visit parent’s in Suffolk with family when I had the urge to pop to the hide at Fowlmere. Got there and there was a Marsh Harrier and a Red Kite in the air together. Stated walking around to the hide when I got an obscure message about a Fulmar at Wilstone. Twenty minutes and several phone calls later my plans had changed and I was on the way in the opposite direction into West Herts. Got the Fulmar before heading off, rather later than scheduled to Suffolk.
